Derricks DJ sets are deep and powerful, infused with funk and soul, never just techno and never predictable. Some say he lays it down with techno a house-head can love and house a techno purist can get with. Hes influenced by the minimal but emotionally driven Detroit sound, deep and dark house music, hard, powerful (but jackin') techno, and nu sounds like broken, tribal, world and dub.

Born in Toronto, Derrick moved to Michigan in the early '90s. In 1995, he was a founding member of Detor Productions, which produced events in and around the Detroit area. A few years later Detor expanded to Toronto, holding events featuring talent from across the globe. Derrick then began working with techno Godfather, Derrick May, as Label Manager of his seminal Transmat Records label. He introduced and developed artists like Aril Brikha, Lucas Rodenbush, John Arnold, John Beltran and Jeremy Ellis. He later launched "Kross-Over" Promotions to service the true, downtown Detroit scene. Flagship Kross-Over events "Bump" and "Instant Vintage" introduced acts like Alex Attias, Omar, Rich Medina, King Britt, Amp Fiddler and Donnie. Derrick was instrumental in the development of Amp Fiddlers debut album "Waltz of the Ghetto Fly.

Most are unaware that Derrick took over as Festival Director of Movement in 2003 (Detroit's Electronic Music Festival) two months before the date. He successfully organized the free event with little time, few resources and no financial support from the city of Detroit. He took the job a second time in 2004. It was again successfully executed with four stages in three twelve-hour days and with over seventy acts, tens of thousands of people visited the festivalagain entirely free.

If you've listened to techno music in the last 10 years then Derrick Ramirez has probably touched your eardrums in some way. Either youve witnessed him firsthand behind the decks or youve experienced the results of his actions as the silent energy behind events, festivals, tours, artist and record label management. Now back in his hometown of Toronto, Derrick is focused on DJing and throwing small events in the Toronto area.

In the past 10 years I guess Ive just been another one of those fools looking for the perfect beat."
