Amy Katz and Kate Cassidy's cozy College Street locale 52 Inc. -- named in honour of women forming 52 per cent of the population -- gleefully confounded the neighbourhood when it opened in '95. Cafe, club, gallery and clothing boutique, 52 Inc. became a funky, feminist-flavoured hangout that encourages ethical consumption, local creators and the art of having a good time. "The motivation has been to create a space the community could interact with -- hang art, spin music and so on," says Katz. "What's fun is that the atmosphere changes from night to night."
